“Macht Zur See”- Power at Sea. Excerpts taken from sculpture made at Vienna by Rudolf Weyr in 1895. Presumably, the picture depicts Poseidon who looks on from a rock alongside a heroic nude woman with a robe conveniently flying across her groin standing on a ship, presumably his wife and contour Amphitrite at the top who is considered the goddess of calm seas and safe passage through storms while Poseidon was known for his rage and considered god of storms and earthquakes. It is said that Amphitrite’s voice is the only thing that can calm her husband’s mightiest of rages and lull him to a deep slumber so as to bring the ocean to peace once more. There also is one man who seem to be getting condemned to the ocean depths. There is not much literature about the sculpture anywhere thus making it open to interpretation. So originally it could mean for both of them to be ruling together in harsh conditions while there are others who cannot survive the sea’s wrath. Or it could depict the superiority of Amphitrite’s calmness over Poseidon’s wrath and rage. There also have been authors who have linked it to sexuality and have quoted that ‘power can be seducing sometimes’. Or it could even mean something else, thus leaving a room for one to have their own interpretation and making it the kind of work that I love the most, the ones leaving a mystery and raising a question. #madmangotdonewiththewall ???? The Maqtha Art District is an installment of street art and murals throughout a small slum in Hyderabad which has been put up in the last two years (2016 & 2017). I invite you to consider the value and irony of this project, and whether you believe it is a worthwhile investment of time and resources. Tell me thoughts below! Personally, I think art is the greatest nutrient for the soul, and am glad that so many people have a physical brightness brought into their corner of this still developing country. Four years after street art arrived in India, colorful murals are transforming urban landscapes in major cities such as Mumbai and New Delhi in a variety of places, from slums to rail stations. The appeal is not just visual. It is helping brighten the environment of rundown urban spaces and putting the common man in touch with art as it frees it from the confines of galleries. Art is the ancient religious tradition that has been followed by each one of us , in every corner of the world from ages . Art is the freedom to express a vision of an artist . It has been the essence of our city Nashik from ancient times , in the form of stone cut architecture , temples and idols situated all across the city which are admired , loved and worshipped by the locals and people from all over the world . It’s time that we join hand in hand to elaborate the art in form of visual delights throughout the streets of Nashik , creating a space adorned & enjoyed by everyone . When it comes to creation , how can we forget the majestic creator of the living art called human and the universe . Devoting the first art of our series to the lord of creation - “Shiva” the Shakti of vision and art ..

An artist is in love with architecture and an architect is in love with art. This week we look into the works of two artists for whom the wall becomes an object of gaze and admiration. American artist Gaia aims to speak to audiences about issues of global warming and globalization creating work that is contextual and referential to the architecture its made on. Architect cum artist Ullas Hydoor is inspired by the monotony of life at the Inland Conatiner Depot in Delhi and personifies it on the wall . Watch the works of these two artists come alive this week on Colour My City.
